J. Ka‘ai Spencer, Hawaii Preparatory Academy’s strength and conditioning coordinator, will offer Ka Makani Strength and Conditioning classes beginning Jan. 6 at the school’s Nakamaru Fitness Center on the Upper Campus.

Classes, which are open to all community members, are scheduled between 9 a.m.-noon Monday through Friday. Fees are $20 per session, or $180 for a 10-session package. Space is limited to 10 participants per class.

Spencer is a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS) and a USA weightlifting coach (USAW) with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and rehabilitation services. He also has a Master of Education Degree in Teaching.

Spencer will lead participants through a progressive training regimen that increases overall strength, power and athleticism. All participants will start at Level 1 and progress to Levels 2 and 3 at the instructor’s discretion.

The training style is geared toward the athlete and will include Olympic lifts, injury prevention, and enhancement of specific movements.

“Whether you are a new to strength training, or a seasoned athlete, this program will challenge you to reach a higher level of fitness,” said Spencer. “The exercises will be demanding, yet never impossible.”
